Working With Schools

Turn Around is a literacy and numeracy charity based in St Mary Cray, providing free one-to-one support with reading, writing, maths and English language to both adults and children. We offer this service at no charge to individuals and schools.

Turn Around would like to extend an offer of support to local schools at this time when many children have had their education disrupted. We have a team of experienced volunteer tutors to provide one-to-one support with literacy and numeracy, either online or in school. Turn Around has a 98% success rate with students who are learning to read or trying to improve their reading and comprehension ability and 95% with students gaining basic maths skills.

Our volunteers are trained to use methods that work to achieve these objectives, including patient, guided reading, the nurturing of comprehension skills, straightforward explanations of basic maths methods and the identification of each student’s individual learning needs. The majority of students report being happier and more confident in their abilities after 3 months of one-to-one help for 1 hour a week.

Turn Around also offers an after-school service at our centre in St Mary Cray and various outreach locations in the boroughs of Bromley and Lewisham.

All our volunteer tutors have Enhanced DBS checks. If you would like more information about our service or to arrange a meeting to discuss our offer further please get in touch.
