The Exchange

The Exchange was opened in 2006 in order to provide a permanent base for Turn Around. Over the years, thanks to many generous donations, a rich and varied resource for education and leisure has been built up.

Based in St Mary Cray, Orpington, the Turn Around charity provides free one-to-one tuition in reading, writing and basic maths. The Exchange boasts a well stocked library of contemporary and classic literature, for both adults and children. We have a wide selection of reference books and learning resources. All books can be borrowed by students for as long as they need. We welcome book donations and hold regular book sales that are open to the general public.

Founder and trustee Michelle Paul MBE explains why our service is needed:
“Literacy and numeracy – that many of us take for granted – are crucial to a happier, more inclusive society and an enriched workforce, helping to create a healthy economy. The consequences of not having these skills include being unable to get a job, tell the time, travel or engage socially. These in turn often cause low self-esteem, ill health and depression.”

Whether you are looking for a safe and gentle learning environment or just a good read, customers or casual browsers are most welcome at The Exchange. We have a large selection of fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children, plus a small selection of DVDs. A small fee is payable for taking items:  books are 50p and DVDs are £1. They are yours to keep but if you do return them in good condition you will get back 90% of what you paid.

Book donations are welcome at The Exchange during opening hours. For larger quantities it may be possible for us to arrange a collection.

Please phone Turn Around 01689 835 079 to discuss collection or to confirm that we will be open when you come.
